Best Chilli Cutlets - Banana Chillies Stuffed and Fried

This recipe is for the chilli lovers! 

My mother used to make these irresistibly delicious chilli cutlets for special occasions. We loved them and finished the whole plate off in minutes!

These banana chillies offer a satisfying crunch and a vibrant mix of flavors in every bite. Once you gather the ingredients, making a large batch is simple—especially when banana chillies are in season. It's the perfect treat to share with family and friends.


Ingredients needed:

(Note: Exact amounts aren't critical—adjust according to your taste.)

  • Banana chillies
  • Onions (chopped)
  • Tinned tuna or any cooked fish
  • Boiled potatoes
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Chilli powder
  • A dash of lemon juice
  • Curry leaves (if available)
  • Plain flour
  • 1 egg
  • A large onion
  • 1 garlic clove
  • Green chillies (chopped)
  • Golden breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying

For the Filling:

  • Heat a little oil in a pan and sauté the chopped onions and garlic 
  • Add the chopped green chillies and a few crushed curry leaves 
  • Stir in the cooked fish and mashed boiled potatoes
  • Season with salt, black pepper, and chilli powder
  • Squeeze a little lemon juice over the mixture and give everything a good stir
  • Your filling is ready!

Preparing the Chillies:

  • Carefully slit the banana chillies down the middle, creating a cavity.
  • Stuff each chilli with the prepared fish and potato filling.



For the Batter:

  • In a bowl, mix together half a cup of plain flour, water, a pinch of turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
  • Adjust the consistency to make a batter that’s smooth and slightly runny—but not too thick.

Coating and Frying:

  • Dip the stuffed chillies into the batter
  • Roll them in golden breadcrumbs 
  • Heat oil in a frying pan and fry the chillies until they are crispy and golden on all sides.
  • Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
